Development of Malmens väg as a tourist destination

About the project

To strengthen winter tourism and develop Råne älvdal as a destination, the historical winter trail Malmens väg was upgraded. The trail stretches through the river valley along an old transport route that the Sami used to transport ore with reindeer and sleds from mines in Gällivare to the coast. It has long played an important role in local outdoor life but has lacked coordination, clear information, and functioning operation.

Through the project, the trail has been re-signed, cleared, and received new rest areas. Bridges have been improved and adapted for, among other things, dog sledding. A new accessible rest area has been built, and cooperation has been established with, among others, the municipality of Boden for long-term maintenance. Part of the information work is now integrated into Naturkartan and accessible via web and app.

At the same time, a development plan for hiking trails has been developed in response to demand from both visitors and tourism entrepreneurs. The idea is to create a year-round option where the history and nature of the river valley become accessible to more people year-round.
