The tannery in Sjulnäs – a cultural historical meeting place

To preserve the tannery in Sjulnäs' unique cultural heritage, a project was initiated with the goal of mapping and developing the site into a vibrant meeting place with historical roots. The tannery, which has been closed since the 1970s, is one of the few preserved examples of the small-scale industry that once thrived in the area. With the building largely untouched since the last century and with original furnishings, tools, and documentation, there was an unusual opportunity to highlight both local history and craftsmanship.

The project led to the formation of the Sjulnäs Tannery association, which took over the building. A comprehensive inventory was conducted, the tannery's history was documented, and collaboration was initiated with museums, craftsmen, and other stakeholders. A plan for future activities was developed with the aim of creating a museum, a café, a place for craft courses, and a vibrant gathering place for the village.

The restoration has now begun, and the site has already become a popular destination with tours, exhibitions, and events.
